Tongibari tradition
The area under the Padma, Dhaleshwari and Ichhamati rivers is 194.96 sq km and the number of people is 1,89,580. Thana headquarters was established in 1918. In 1983, Tongibari thana was upgraded to upazila. The area was relatively low land. The vast majority of the area were submerged under water all year round. In this situation, people built the house upstairs but did not get adequate soil. So small pieces of land were filled with soil, they used to make small houses with bash, wood, hay, etc.. These small houses were known locally as Tong. Most of the buildings in the area were Tong. So the name of the area from Tong House is Tangibari. Many people think that there was a Jalatungi. The girls used to bat at Jalatungi. The village that was located in Jalatungi was known as Tungibari. In ancient times, its name is Tangibari.
