Sonarang Twin Temple is an archaeological heritage of 18th century of Bangladesh. This is located at Sonarang village of Tongibari upzilla of Munshiganj district .Though it is known as a twin monastery in oral history, it is, in fact, a twin temple. From engraving of the stone of the temple, a Hindu named Rupchandra was supposed to construct “Boro Kali Mondir” in 1843 and the smaller one the same man built in 1886. The small temple is basically Shiva temple. The height of the big temple is about 15 meters.
About 241 feet high, this shrine is five feet taller than Delhi’s Qutub Minar. So, it is considered highest monastery in the Indian subcontinent. The eight – foot-shaped monastery is 21 feet long and wide. The masonry walls made of lime-syrup are quite thick. The wall of Shiva’s temple is engraved with the agitated heads of the snakes. The local people believe that these snakes are supposed to be the custodians of the precious stones at the top of the temple. Although the establishment is known as to monasteries, they are actually Hindu temples. It is said that the funeral rite of Sir Rupchandra is observed here.
